Vigorous deciduous climber. Huge heart-shaped leaves turn scarlet in autumn. Scented flowers followed by small purple fruits. Ht 15m.
This is a magnificent climber for roomy situations where it will not need cutting back it does not tame sufficiently to fit onto small pieces of trellis on a house wall. The large rounded leaves, which can be almost 30cm (1ft) across on a large specimen, are much less lobed than those of a common grape vine and have a dimpled texture which looks most attractive throughout the summer. But in autumn when they turn fiery red, gold and orange, the effect is amazing. Plants need netting or similar to cling to.
