This twining vine is awesome in springtime as it leafs out and flowers with large, drooping clusters of purple-blue, fragrant flowers. The vine often climbs trees, and is most striking when seen in full bloom draped from the limbs of a high pine. Leaves consist of 7 to 13 leaflets of large size; after flowering, very attractive, velvety pods are produced, containing seed. Winter aspect is a snarled, tangled mass of naked vine. Wisteria is usually very long-lived, and trunks can become quite large. Vines are woody and tough.
