A strong-growing climber reaching a height of 12m or more in a tree. the twining, young shoots are armed with a pair of short spines at each bud. Leaves varying form obovate to orbicular, 5-13cm long, turning clear yellow in autumn. Also in autumn the brownish capsules split open to reveal a yellow lining containting red seeds. A beautiful climber in autumn, when the scarlet and gold-spangled fruits glisten against a backcloth of yellow. the most consistent species for fruiting.
