CRYPTOMERIA japonica

'Japanese Cedar'. A large, fast-growing, broadly columnar tree with reddish, shredding bark and spreading or decurved branches. Leaves awl-shaped, densely crowded on long, slender branchlets. It resembles the 'Wellingtonia'(Sequoiadendron giganteum), but its leaves are longer and its bark has not the spongy thickness of the American tree. Easily cultivated and thriving best in moist soils.
