LARIX kaempferi

'Japanese Larch'. A vigorous tree of large size, with reddish shoots. Leaves 2-3cm long, sea-green, broader than those of L.decidua. Cones ovoid, 2-3cm long with scales turned outward and downward at tips. A commonly planted larch used extensively for afforestation, withstanding exposure well. The reddish twigs appear to create a purple haze above a plantation on a sunny afternoon in late winter. (2b)
