PRUNUS dulcis

'Common Almond'. A universal favourite and one of the best spring-flowering trees. A small tree with lanceolate, long-pointed, finely-toothed leaves. Flowers pink, borne singly or in pairs in March and April. Fruit ovate, flat, shell velvety pubescent, dry, stone smooth, pitted. The edible almonds of commerce are mainly introduced and extensively naturalised in the Mediterranean region. (7)
